What is the aim of a CV?
Remember the purpose of your CV is to convey your qualifications, skills and experience to a potential employer as simply and as quickly as possible. Keep in mind that employers will be reading many CVs in a short period. This means long winded, complex CVs will often be overlooked in favour of simply designed conscise ones.
The Basics
| Be honest. Even the smallest lie or inconsistency will be found out and at the most inconvienient time for you. | |
| Ensure you have an electronic version and ensure that it can be opened by MS Word as most agencies and potential employers will try to view your CV in MS Word first. | |
Try to limit your CV to 3 pages. You can do this by summarising older roles as in most cases any relavent experience will be demonstrated in later job roles. |
|
| Use a spell checker and get a friend or family member to read it for you. Computers are good but can't replace the human eye. | |
| Use a standard font and simple layout. Most potential employers are used to reading documents in Arial or Times New Roman. Don't stand out for the wrong reasons by annoying a potential employer by making your CV unreadable. | |
| Ensure you list all your educational and professional qualifications. If you have unusual qualifications or non UK qualifications provide a brief description of what they are to help the reader understand what level they are equivalent to. | |
| List your career history in reverse chronological order. | |
| Use professional business language and avoid conversational or slang language. | |
| Entitlement to work in the UK. If you cannot prove you have a right to work in the UK Merritt and Baker will not put you forward to clients until you have provided the necessary information. Ensure that you have provided this information on your CV. |
Hints & Tips
| Use bullet points. Summarise your experience and make it easy to access and understand. | |
| Ensure all titles and headings are underlined or in bold. This makes the CV easier to read and understand where one section ends and the next begins. | |
Only include relavent training courses. |
|
| Include specific dates for each of your previous jobs. | |
| Ensure all your career gaps are explained. | |
| Include hobbies and interests and put these at the end of your CV. These provide a way to differentiate yourself from the crowd and provide a talking point in your interview. |
